when it comes to taxonomy I would agree with you. I am referring to general knowledge of the groups of reptiles only. Not their questions of systematics.
Taxonomy is a science of its own and is not beholden to reptiles, or any other group. It is a very specific and detailed science. I do not believe it requires University training to acquire a knowledge of it, but it would be difficult and require considerable effort on the part of the person interested.
