my reading of his papers is that the patternless form in S. apalachicola is a relictual subspecies which has been "swamped" by genes from the north, producing a wide range of variously blotched phenotypes ranging from almost patternless to chain king.
of course, this hypothesis didn't start with krysko, as i remember my dad saying much the same thing back in the 70's whenever he went to the area and collected some kings.
