While it's probably safe to assume that the originator of the virus was one of the people who participated in the poll, it is not safe to assume that the email was deliberately sent by a human agent. Many computer viruses that replicate by email are quite capable of generating email and sending it to anyone you happen to send any other email to or to anyone who is in your Outlook address book. Yes, most viruses are written to take advantage of the large and sloppy security holes in Outlook, and using this as your mail program is tantamount to hanging a "please abuse me" sign on your virtual door.

I could nail it down for you if you have all the header information of every person who sent email to the poll address including the viruses. But that might be an invasion of privacy, and there is an even easier way to track this down assuming this wasn't a deliberate attempt to sabotage the poll.

Everybody who emailed the poll address: please ask your friends if they have been receiving weird email from you that you didn't send. If so, you are harboring a computer virus and you need a bit of help cleaning it up. If nobody on this list is harboring a virus, then you might consider the possibility of a deliberate attack on the poll. But no one can say for certain right now whether the virus was deliberate or accidental, so please let's not get too excited about what may have been an accident.

Cheers,

TT
