Fascinating discussion of the topic... up to the point of reason. This argument has been going on long before the pet trade jumped in. Take a look at how many times Gechelone pardalis has been revised over the years. While the commercial trade does capitalize on the name game, I believe it is a minor factor in the driving force. Personally, I'd like to see the subspecific nomenclature dropped.
