I think herps arent really given the necessary attention they need in these big stores. Dogs and cats are their big thing so thats what they now. They may have someone who knows herps, or it may be a fish person. I have spoken to a few people who had no clue about herps but thought they did and soem do have a knowledgable staff, but this inconsistency is bad for the consumer and especially new commers who need to learn about these animals and their care.
personall I would ony by an animal from a breeder, but if I were to buy from a store I would likely try a small pet store with a good reptile collection because there is usually someone there who is knowledgable and they tend to have healthy animals. I cringe every time i go into a petland and see some of the animals they have.
