In mid december, temp 40 degrees F, we found a sluggish black rat snake on our front porch sunning. It had a round mass towards the end of its body, which we guessed was some sort of abcess. We dropped it off at our vet for a closer look and ran some errands. He called us and asked us to guess what he found. X-ray showed the snake had swallowed a golf ball. He took pictures of the surgery, and sure enough, you can see the logo on the ball through the membrane of the intestinal tract. The snake has made a full recovery, and is used for educational programs by members of the local herpetological society. Her name? Spaulding.
