venomous gatrer snake?

A guy at work was telling me a story about a girl that lived next door to him being bit by a garter snake and going into a coma. They took the snake to a vet and did test on it and found "venom" in it's saliva. The vet told him if you are allergic to bee stings a bite from a non-venomous snake will give you the same reaction if it's saliva gets in the wound.

Wow.
