Almost killed by a garter snake

When I was about eleven years old I was very nearly killed by a 10 inch eastern garter snake. I had already been keeping snakes for a couple of years by this time. All the neighbors would come to get me when they had a snake in the yard. One day my next door neighbor came over very excited he had a snake in his shed.
The man was a large man close to 300lbs I was about 100 at the time. He escorts me to his shed and is very jumpy buts wants to help me find the snak so he doesn't run across it later.He enters the shed with me right behind him. About that time the snake comes out from under the lawn mower. I never saw such a big man move so fast. As he started backing up I barely had time to drop to the ground to get out of his way as I was reaching for the snake.He fell over me and landed in the grass behind me as I came up holding the snake.I appologized for making him fall.
He said it was worth it to get rid of the snake. If he had landed on me I would have been crushed. It was a close call.Buddy
