: While we're talking about tough rodents, I had a female bullsnake that ate like a crazed weasel. We liked to feed her live for fun, because the poor little bastards never got a chance. Once we put in a white mouse with her, and she went for it in typical pituophis fashion (i.e. like the devil itself) and laid ahold of its back end - something that usually disables them by itself. It immediately turned and bit her on the side, causing her to thrash its head repeatedly into the tank wall, bloodying its nose and everything. Then it got away and led her on a merry chase all round the cage, and she half swallowed it before its struggling became so fierce she let go of it. Still alive, it proceeded to try to fight back, even though it was covered with snake drool. She finally got it down, but the lump was moving still and we could hear it squeaking. I almost felt bad for that little guy - but he's the reason that we kill all our mice now before feeding, no matter how scary the snake. Sometimes you just run into a tough little SOB! I hate mice, but that guy inspires admiration even in me! We ceremonially invoke his name before every feeding as a token of remembrance.
