Just the other day, as I was coming back from goose hunting, on a remote back road, I saw a big stick on the road. I didn't pay any attention. Then when it was just about under the hood, I saw it was a copperhead. I slammed on the brakes and knew I had hit it. Cursing at myself I backed up and the snake was gone. I must have JUST missed it! I was very happy that I didn't crush it and drove about 15 mph the rest of the way.
