when I was younger I used to keep a lot of snakes that I
caught. I never kept any for very long, but It was fun,
and I really liked seeing my mom get freaked out by them.
Anyway, I caught this really pretty ribbon snake in a
cranberry bog and decided to keep it for a while. It
ate feeder fish with gusto and seemed very content in its
cage in my room on the second story of our house.
Well, one day of course it was missing, though I still
don't know how it got out, and I couldn't find it anywhere
I gave up looking after a few days and decided not to
tell my mom that a snake had gotten loose in her house.
Since she wouldn't go near my room (another benefit of
snakes) she wouldn't have known if I lost a hundred or
got a hundred more.
Well, over a week later I was in the basement in a room
that is precisely the farthest travelling distance you can
reach in our house from my room, typing away on my dad's
computer and playing games.
I was barefoot as it was summer, and I jumped up and yelled
when Something cold slithered across my feet.
I gathered myself back up and there was the little ribbon
snake, two stories down and lots of halls and twists and
stairways away from where he had escaped. Somehow he had
escaped teh watchful eyes of two cats and one dog that loved
killing snakes and made it to the basement.
I quickly smuggled him back up to my room and fed him
some fish. He went back into the wild shortly after.
