I'm not that old, but I can remember spending my summers as a kid in northern California on my familys' gold claim. I was constantly finding, catching, and playing with water snakes and larval stage salamanders. I remember swimming in the river downstream from where my dad was dredging when he yelled down that he was sending some friends my way. The next thing I knew there were about six water snakes swimming with me. My sister was none too happy about it. My dad always warned me that one day I was going to latch onto a cottonmouth and it wasn't 'till I was older that I found out that cottonmouths don't live in California. I remember when the baby lizards would hatch out and they'd be running all over the rock; tons of them! I'd like to go back there.
