Dug-- I don't have any keen insights on handling softshells. I try not to handle mine and disrupt them too much because they are meant to be breeding animals. I've noticed that softshells are the most aggressive of my species as far as biting goes. Some of them are also quite aggressive with each other, especially males. But individual animals and some particular species seem to be better in this regard. My Indian Flapshells are pretty calm when I handle them to check them for eggs and they never try to bite. But most of my other softshells try to take a pound of flesh if I touch them! Good luck! --Maxx
