Okay, this is just an off the top of my head wild idea, but given the special vulnerabilities of softshells, it might work...

What about laying a bath tub rubber mat (you know, the ones with suction cups) across the rocks? You could cut it to fit. The idea would be good traction, non-abrasive (hopefully), and comfortable. Do remember that the ones in bath tubs eventually have mildew growing under them, although that's just a warm, moist phenomenon, I think. It might not look terribly 'real,' if that's a concern.
