: Does anyone know what kind of Softshell turtles they sell in Chinatown? I saw several seafood shops selling them and decided to get one and spare it's life . They were 7.99 per pound and I paid 8.00. I currently have several turtles and I am fairly familiar with US softshells. I can send a picture. The turtle was very clean and seems to be doing OK. I have him in a separate tank for observation.
After getting him settled, he began to get his color back and he is without a doubt a Florida Softshell. What threw me was his Green color. Once he settled down he turned dark blackish grey. I also found an article discussing the large problem of over harvesting softshells in Florida for the New York and SanFransico asian food market.
If any of you find yourselves in China Town in NY, look in the Seafood markets Cathrine Street and you'll several market selling them for around 8.00. Mine was in a plastic net bag (like the ones they put onions in) other store had them in large buckets.
