Anything that discomforts them in their habitat while in captivity will make them become somewhat cranky, I have three softshells, two sub-adults and a juvenile, the juvenile completely hates his habitat, I've put plastic plants for it to hide on, but ends up thrashing it around; the older ones, have had the same habitat for a while and are more docile in every aspect, they will have my fingers for lunch if I stick my hand in their tank, but they're not as stressy, since they've become somewhat acostumed to their surroundings. best thing in my opinion is to keep their tanks constant and try and not move things around too much,
hope that helps.
