not unique to softies, but any 10 gallon tank is going to be foul after one feeding or bowel movement from a turtle over an inch or two. Feeding in a separate bin will help, as will a bigger tank.

By the way, I can't speak for the folks who's pictures you've seen, but I take pictures of my tanks right after I clean them... then the setup is perfectly clean and hasn't been rearranged by turtles or fouled up yet.
