I would love to hear examples of how people in the herp hobby support conservation in meaningful ways - particularly I'd like to hear examples of how herpetological societies or other groups have done so. I am aware of herp societies making small cash grants to researchers, and I'm aware of MARS using some profits to preserve rainforest. What other examples are there? The Horned Lizard Conservation Society seems to be an unusual group in that it is organized around conservation and engages in funding, joining in legal advocacy, etc. Are there other membership groups (not counting SSAR, etc.) that do specific things to further conservation goals?
I'm the editor for a herp society and would really enjoy doing an article on contributions of hobbyists / hobbyist groups to conservation.
