Herp medicine research needs your assistance

For those of you who don't know me, I've been in the herp world and
a breeder for almost 15 years. As a second career, I'm just finishing
up vet school out at the University of Wisconsin, and logically
enough, my focus is in herp medicine. However, as part of my focus,
I'm conducting several research projects to further medicine and surgery
in reptiles, something that will benefit all of us.

Right now, I'm about to start a project looking at effectiveness of
surgical anesthesia in snakes, particularly a new drug that has only
been on the market a couple years but has great potential for reptiles.
This is a completely new study; no studies have looked at this family
of drugs in this way in reptiles, and could prove to be very helpful
for herp veterinarians everywhere.

This is where herpers come in. I need adult North American colubrids for the
study, all the same species but they can be all kings, rats, gophers,
whatever (so long as they aren't hot nor water snakes and their kin (garters,
natrix, nerodia, etc.). They will not be harmed in the study, as the only
thing that will happen to them is they will be anesthetized, blood drawn,
measurements taken, and awaken. Likely, this will happen twice in each
animal over the course of the study. I will need a minimum of 8 snakes,
and up to 16, if possible.

The money to acquire these animals, however, is very limited, and part will
likely come out of my pocket. The budget will allow for $10-15 each, but
they can be returned to the "seller" after the project is done early this spring.
As an added benefit, all animals will recieve a full medical exam, treatment
for minor medical conditions (deworming, fecal checks, etc.) but they must
be basically healthy on arrival. In addition, whomever provides the animal
will get their name mentioned in the scientific publication upon completion,
to be published in a major veterinary medical journal.

I greatly appreciate your collective support and assistance. If there
are any questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail me directly,
as I rarely have time at this point to check this forum. My prior
works has involved looking at development regulation in frog embryos,
cryopreservation of sperm for artificial insemnation in toads, new
techniques in eye surgery in snakes and lizards, and countless involvements
in developing captive breeding strategies. I am more than willing to
provide credentials and references upon request for anyone interested
in sponsoring this project.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Adolf Maas
