There's a story in the town of Bosco (Indiana I believe) that there was a alligator snapper that lived in a river whose shell was the size of a "dinner table".
Of course there is no proof of this.
I think you might find the entire story in the reptile book entitled "Giant Reptiles".
I think the record for a common snapper is something like 74lbs. and for a ali'snap, I think its 219 (I think it was in the Chicago aquarium).
