Commons' shells become smoother as they age. Lots of people call common snappers alligator snappers. The local attraction here that has an alligator snapper on display gets calls all the time from people wanting them to adopt their 'alligator snapper.' The curator told me that every time except one, the turtles have been common snappers or other species.
