If you don't have access to a body of water that is 3 or 4 feet deep so that it can't freeze solid, then I would bring it indoors. I have been keeping a common for 10+ years and have never let it overwinter outdoors. There have been no problems.
BTW, they don't actually "hibernate" - they remain active, albeit with a greatly slowed metabolism, throughout the winter. At least that's my understanding of what's going on.
