Can SCUD be transfered by a turtle which is kept in the same room as all my other herps but in different enclosures?
:Ben-- SCUD is SubCutaneous Ulcerative Disease. This is a "disease" that is caused by bacteria, in fact, several species of bacteria can be the source of the problem. This is a "wastbasket" term that refers more to the symptoms than to the actual disease itself...kind of like the "flu" could be a virus, a bacterial infection, or something else. SCUD is most common in softshell turtles. I wouldn't get bent out of shape about it. If you have a turtle with a really bad bacterial infection, it isn't a good idea to mix it with other animals. But if you have an animal like this in a large habitat or an outdoor pond, it isn't likely to effect other animals. It's bacteria...most often caused by a turtle that has been kept in really filthy water and not cared for properly. And if one turtle is kept in horrible conditions, more than likely, the other animals will get sick also. I'm not a vet but I've seen a lot of sick turtles and I've never seen a snapper with SCUD. --Maxx
