Biologists are not sure either if the breeding population are breeding; I'd put the alligator snapper back where you found it eventhough maybe it's not illegal for people to killied them for food in your area. Like I said the population are declining. you can help by putting that one back. Those turtle take a long time to mature and if a lot are taken out of the wild for pet pretty soon there won't be any breeding adult left when the older ones die off in about fifty to sixty years. Even then they might not breed.
