Mine was quite a way from water when I found him, too. Found him when I was goose hunting last September, also about a block from the water(the pond is about 1/2 mile from the driveway). He was sitting in the middle of the trail, and if I'd been walking any faster I might have stepped on the little guy.
Like yours, he still had umbilical tissue attached.
