I went years without finding any dead snappers around my house. I had seen many alive, swimming and crossing the land. But this year something is different. In a single pond, no larger than 20 X 20 feet in diameter, I have found three dead snapping turtles, all apearing to have died the day that I found them (I found each of them on a different day). Other wild life seems to be thriving, frogs laying eggs, salamanders too, tadpoles, aquatic insects, all living in what looks to be stress free. There are no fish because it is fed by water runnoff and a spring. Is there something in the water that could be killing the turtles? I will test the water in a week at my school but until then I am left guessing. Is there any chemical or contaminent that only effects snapping turtles? A few years ago a bunch of Map turtles washed up on shore and the local scientists are still trying to figure it out. Any ideas?
