Freezing

My friend has a 16 inch snapper in a pond that is 4x12 and 2feet deep.In the fall he filled the pond with leaves to overwinter the turtle. Here in the north east we haven't had temps above freezing in a few weeks. Will the turtle be ok in the spring? I am worried the pond is frozen solid.
