Studies on the stomach contents of wild snappers reveals that roughly 80% of the common snappers diet is vegetation. Go visit the Smithsonian museum. When scientist first study any animal, the stomach contents are thoroughly cataloged. I do not know anything about the alligator snappers diet if it includes vegetation, but the common eats a lot of it. If you feed any kind of pellet, you are feeding it a large portion of plant material.
:I would think an animal eatting meat would grow faster how is it that they grow faster on plant matter?
