I've built wood-framed ponds out of a plywood base and 2X8's screwed into squares and secured to the base. You stack as many 'squares' as needed to reach required depth. Each square can be secured to the one below with small pre-drilled steel hardware pieces that run across the gap between sections. Put a liner in and drill in trim pieces on top through the liner edge. Trim off the excess liner and it looks pretty good.
Note: I've heard that some people have problems with larger alligator snappers ripping pond liners. You may want to look into rubbermaid stock tanks (available from farm/ feed stores or Lowe's Home Improvement Warehose can order). They have a 300 gallon model that should work well for a single adult alligator snapper or perhaps a male and female.
