:Your pictures are T. r. rugosa. Most shinglebacks seen are eastern T. r. aspera which tend to be black or chocolate brown in color. You are quite correct that not many are around when compared to T r. aspera. See my Picture for a "redish shingleback" not mine unfortunately.

Although not as plentiful as black or chocolate, their are quite a lot of the red/orange phase in Europe, particularly Germany.
