wild caught kingsnake

I have a problem that I need help with. I am not a proponent of wild caught kingsnakes but I was recently contacted by a family who has had a wild caught kingsnake for 2 years, since it was about 7 inches long. It is now about 3 ft. and they don't want it anymore. I already have a captive bred snake in my classroom I'm a teacher). I have been told it is illegal to release this snake back to the wild. They have offered it to me for free. Can I take possession of it legally? I have heard I might need a Freshwater Sportsfishing license. Does anyone know the legalities of this situation? Please help.
