herping in Carlsbad

I was wondering if anybody could help me out and let me know of some good spots to go looking for reptiles, (especially snakes in Carlsbad or anywhere close to there.
I have corn snake, a la paz rosy boa and a diamond python and I love all of them?
I believe in conserving species and I would never collect fromk the wild. I just would be so excited to catch a snake in the wild. I am 23 years old and go to bed dreaming of catching cool snakes. Please help me out. I promise i will not pick up any venomos snakes and get bit. I was also wondering where I could get a liscense to go out and the wild and touch snakes without getting in trouble?
