Perhaps you can help. I recently saw a rather large snake in my
backyard in Escondido, and I am interested in identifying it if
possible. I only saw the rear half of the snake, but I would
estimate the length to be 5-6 ft, very stocky, 10-12 inch girth,
reddish-brown color with distinctive black rectangular offset
patches in three or four rows. I took a look at some web
pictures and it looked a bit like a california red-sided garter
snake, however it was much bigger than these snakes seemed to be
at maximum size.
