Snakebite documentary airs tonight

Sean Leslie films a Mojave green rattlesnake for Animal Planet as Mike Cardwell holds the creature near a Lucerne Valley home.
.

The documentary will focus on Bush’s work during the peak of rattlesnake season in Southern California, his research on venomous creatures and the antivenin CroFab.

The program will allow viewers to make the rounds with him as he and his emergency department colleagues race against time to ease swelling, save limbs and thwart death.

The documentary includes the case of Jennifer Hollis of Lucerne Valley, who nearly died from the bite of a Mojave green rattlesnake.

Bush videotaped his treatment of Hollis last Sept. 17.

The documentary also features one of the first cases Bush treated as an intern at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Apple Valley High School teacher and

coach Rick Gahbrielson, who died in April 1994 after being bitten by a snake that was possibly a Mojave green.

The program also will feature San Bernardino County Sheriff Deputy Chief Michael Cardwell.

Cardwell studies the

hibernation patterns of snakes.

British Broadcasting Corp. and producer Susanne Painter and cinematographer Gavin Maxwell spent three weeks at Loma Linda and in the High Desert during May and June filming medical staff and snakebite patients for the program.
