Identify snake in Panama

On a recent trip to the island of Bocas del Toro on the north
coast of Panama I came across a snake...about 4 feet in length,
black, narrow and a reddish belly. When I went to pick it up one of the local
inhabitants began yelling "poison". Can anyone tell me what kind
of snake it might be? Thanks, Bill
