START SMALL!!!! it also depends on what kind of large herps you plan on handling. large pythons can easily overpower and kill a human...I know from experience. but if you're talking about large snakes, start small with some boas or pythons that don't get much larger than 10 feet. but don't just jump in with a 20 foot retic...you'll die. crocs on the other hand.....
