Before I put the substrate down in the enclosure I usually place several thicknesses of newspaper down first. It's just a little cushion to keep the snake off the glass in the event it burrows right there. You could use cardboard to, or just about anything to distribute the heat a little and barrier the glass some. Good going checking things out ahead of time!
