I use products from this company with a lot of success (and no, I don't sell it, don't even have a personal franchise or whatever they call it). I use Solu-mel mixed down to spot clean water dishes, sides of tanks, things like that. A reputable breeder told me it was safe for animals, so I just wipe it out dry and leave it as that.
For my larger and stronger cleaning needs - like completely cleaning cages (sans animals) and monthly power cleaning of water and food dishes, I use a mixture of Solu-guard. I let the stuff soak, and scrub it out - then I completely rinse it with water until it's clear - then wipe and air dry. This stuff is stronger and not necessarily safe - but it does a great job of disinfecting and used with precautions such as complete rinsing - works well.
These are just my own opinions, though. Good subject.
