Liz,
I did not realize your females were that big. They should be able to handle it, so sure try putting the male in and leave him there for a few weeks. If either shows signs of stress or are not eating as much remove them. As long as they are eating a lot, and the eggs are not under calcified they can be together. But like you said if you keep getting infertile eggs separate them to encourage her to slow down.
