If they were housed with inadequate humidity, bad sheds could have caused the tail loss. Im not sure about the mangaled tail though. Unshed skin at the tip of the tail would eventually lead to a loss of the tail. Another possibility, assuming they were housed together, could be aggression from a cagemate or a mistaken identity of the tail. One could have thought the tip of the tail was a prey item and chomped down on it. Like Teagan said, if the tail is black and mangaled looking take it to the vet, you dont want an infection setting in that would compromise the health of your crested.
