Male auric death - confusing

I had a male gargoyle die on me yesterday. I must say, I'm quite confused and shocked. The night before last I fed him and the female he was housed with. They ran around chasing crickets and doing their thing. When I woke up in the morning, the male was lying on the ground. He couldn't move, his eyes were sunken, and he looked as though he'd lost a ton of weight overnight(!!).
I'm at an absolute loss. This male was very healthy. I've had him for well over a year, and obtained him as an adult with the female. He was supposedly only 4 years old or so.
He has been a good eater, and very healthy - right up until the night before I found him like that! He lived in excellent conditions, and in fact the female is still doing just fine.
I couldn't find a mark or injury to the male.
What could do this to an animal overnight?
