None of mine have ever dropped their tails. If your afraid of it jumping and hurting itself then you can slowly gain it's trust. First try picking it up and holding in it's cage until it seems to calm down. Then once it doesn't seem to be afraid you can take it out of it's cage, but stay close to it's cage just in case it starts to get jumpy. This way you can put him in his cage if he get's too jumpy.
