im sure that heat is neccesary. It will speed up their metabolism and they get more active. I personally think its always a good idea to give them a place to warm up a bit. Although from what ive read theyll be fine with pretty cool temps at night as long as it warms up during the day. I found that after I added a heat source at night they were more active. As far as belly heat for digestion im not too sure.
