A breeder told me a drier ratio is often used for monitors and desert dwelling reptiles, while more moist ratios are used for tropical animals. Try different ratios, but the basic way to tell if you have enough humidity is so that the water just barely beads up on the sides. You also have to take in consideration of how much ventilation you have. Even with a 1:1 ratio you could have a very low humidity if it all escapes.
:I read in the Annual Reptile Magazine 2003 that they use 200 grams of perlite or vermiculite (sp?) and 100 grams of water, so a 2:1 ratio. They also said that they get a better hatch rate in these drier conditions. I use 100 grams of perlite and Vermiculite (mixed) with 100 grams of water, so a 1:1 ratio. The perlite/vermiculite is moist, but you can't squeeze any of the water out of it. The containers I use only hold 100 grams of perlite. Is my ratio okay? or should I have a 2:1 ratio. I was thinking I could but 100 grams of perlite and then only put in 50 grams of water. The down side to this is that I would have to monitor the water a lot more.
:Or I could just add 2 little holes on top instead of 3 to keep humidity in longer.
