Check reptile clubs in your area. I'm sure there are a few people with them. I'm in Edmonton, and can think of at least 3 people I could get bugs from.
And if you think $50 is bad...try trippling that or better, in American funds, just for shipping. Then tack on inspection on both sides.
The fact is just that shipping is expensive inside the country, simply because there are fewer companies = fewer options.

So check out a local society. Ask on the Canadian forum if you can't find them otherwise, someone will help you out.
