Sorry you are questioning my vet's advice. The advice was given by TWO vets (one being Cornell University Veternary Clinic). The use MAY be controversial. I am not saying everybody should run out and use mineral oil every time they think their animal has not gone to the bathroom. However if we are talking about a truely impacted animal, one that has been diagnosed by a vet as being impacted, and he says use mineral oil then darn right I will use it because if the animal doesn't pass the blockage HE WILL DIE!
Do I condone people trying to diagnose their own animals and treat with whatever they have on hand? NO, of course not. Any medication can be dangerous if not administered correctly, that is WHY you should go to a vet.
Now this may offend you, but if the choice comes down a vet's advice or yours on the best course of treatment for my animals....I am taking the advice of the man who went through one of the hardest scholastic programs existing and is currently working for one of the most respected vet clinics in the country. I am also concerned for the health and well being of my pets.
