the cork is great.....if you want the shoreline effect just tilt it at an angle to the waeter-air interface. (that is if you buy flat sheet of it)
you might also get a cork half log and sew it(with say fishing line (careful not to allow any loose pices for entanglements) or hooks to a cork flat and you can make a ramp up to higher, fully dry place.
I'd avoid slate, it can scratch plastrons and you don't want shell rot of the plastron as it is hard to treat and takes long to heal.
In the wild i have rarely seen turtles basking on any kind of rock unless there was nothing else available.
