well this is a somewhat debated issue. many people now prefer lower temps for sliders (except for ones healing from illness) tha used to be recommended. If you search the forum i'm sure you'll find differnet answers. I personally provide TWO basking spots (but then i have lots invested in my turtles, if you only have one or two this may not seem "worth it" and it probably isn't necessary. For red ears and yellow bellies the water varies between 71 and 80 and one basking spot varies from between 80 and 85 while the other goes from about 90 to 97. Most of them use the warmer one most of the time. The ambient room temp is a pretty constant 77 by day and maybe 74 at night.
