I've done this several times. I don't use any pain numbers or killers, just things to keep the area sterile and the tools clean. I won't every suggest another person does this, though, as it would not be ethical (in my own opinion, and to myself) to recommend someone perform a minor surgery on an animal.
I would say, though, that my times have been made easier by the assistance of people to clean tools, hold the turtle, etc.
Another option might be to call any vet schools in your area and plead your case. Perhaps they have nearly fully trained students or could use it as a learning session. They would undoubtedly have more experience than you...
