Undergravel dirt/UG filter help

I'm suffering from undergravel dirt, that constantly builds up inbetween the gravel and bigger stones. I have a basking area which consists of mudd, and after a nice bask the turtles return to the water and dirty it. All is ok coz the external filter I have is really good, and usually sucks up all the floating dirt. But still, some of it drops down to the gravel and stays there till the turtles stirr it up again. That's why I though of getting a UG filter which I would use with the external filter, but insted of hearing good things about that filter, I hear that I shouldn't use it. What can I do then? Let the dirt just build up under the gravel? I don't want to take the gravel out or the mudd, coz the guys enjoy both. What should I do? get a filter or try something else? If something else, WHAT? Please help
